Arthur and Beryl Crabtree feel they have earned some peace and quiet after 24 years of bringing up their four boisterous kids. One by one their offspring pack up and leave home, and their dreams of quiet are coming true at last. But it's only a false alarm as each of the young ones' plans fall through. They all end up back home with mom and dad, and somehow the Crabtrees end up with more kids than they started out with. Arthur and Beryl realize that parenthood can be a lifelong sentence.

Mel and Mac are looking for an asteroid to show as a science project. It's hard to do science when they are fighting all the time as (younger) brother and (older) sister. When they are walking through the woods, they see something, but it doesn't turn out to be a rock or meteor. Mel sees footprints and pretty soon, they are taken to a strange and socially awkward grown man. Mel and Mac must work together to do the difficult task of keeping Moses away from trouble, as they try and get Moses to where he came from - something that is more difficult than they thought as he turns out to be from far, far away.

A Pittsburgh apartment superintendent loses his job and home when the apartment building where he lives and works at is suddenly destroyed by fire. Daniel and his family moves in with his brother but that doesn't last for long due to the two families not getting along with each other. The family moves from rundown hotels to homeless shelters as Daniel searches work as a electrician while his wife takes waitress jobs to try to make ends meet.
